In 2021, the production of millet in the Nigerian news was estimated at two million metric tonnes. Between 2005 and 2021, the millet production in the country decreased significantly. The largest drop in production was registered in 2011, when the crop volume experienced a decrease of 75% compared to 2010, going from 5.2 million Mt to 1.3 million Mt with a significant difference of 3.9 million Mt.

Millet is an essential crop grown in Africa (Mali, Nigeria, Niger etc.) and Asia’s semiarid tropics (especially in India and China) with 97% of millet production in developing countries. In 2020, global production of millet was 30.5 million tonnes, led by India with 41% of the world total. Niger also had significant production.
